As a professional makeup artist since 2010, I’ve been able to witness trends, habits, and common reactions throughout the years. One of those common reactions being to certain parts of the professional makeup application that can feel a bit intimidating if you aren’t used to wearing makeup on a regular basis.

  1. Blush: Rosy cheeks can feel like a lot when you’re not used to wearing makeup on a regular basis. I always joke with my clients when I’m applying blush that I promise I’m not applying 5 pounds of it, though it feels that way. My preferred process of applying blush is by building it up and blending as I go, which can take a few minutes to complete. Blush is placed a bit more strategically than how our face naturally flushes, so it can look a little off if you’re not used to it.
  2. Filled-In Eyebrows: I always say if we don’t do anything to your eyebrows, it’ll look off since we’re giving you a full face of makeup. But adding coloring to the brows, even lightly with powder or pencil, can feel intense when you haven’t filled in your brows at all before. We can do anything from simply applying clear gel to keep your brows in place all the way to a tinted pomade, so make sure to communicate with your makeup artist so you can work together to make sure your makeup looks finished while keeping you comfortable.
  3. Foundation: Every makeup application comes with a level of coverage on the overall skin of your face. This is to ensure your complexion looks even, both in pictures and in person. Some people prefer more, others less. But sometimes seeing your skin look more flawless than you’re used to can be shocking, especially if you’re used to not wearing makeup on a daily basis. Make sure to talk with your makeup artist about how much makeup you usually wear and be honest about what type of coverage you’re looking for. We can do anything from zero foundation and just spot concealing all the way to full coverage, making freckles disappear. It’s up to you!
