In the past, I’ve talked about why I started doing makeup and what that journey looked like. Let’s uncover some of the incredible makeup artists that inspired me along the way to become the makeup artist I am today.
Carmindy

My first exposure to Carmindy was on the wildly popular tv show “What Not To Wear” in the early 2000’s. This was years before I truly discovered makeup and what it would eventually mean to me, but I always found myself looking forward to her couple minute segment of the show the most. She was always so sweet, radiated joy, and helped the person in her chair look and feel like themselves. I find myself acting similar and wanting to achieve with each client that gets into my chair these days, too, so I guess you could say she influenced me.

Throughout the years, I picked up a couple of her books, “The Five Minute Face” and “Get Positively Beautiful” and these still remain in my collection as a source of inspiration.

Mally Roncal

Mally Roncal is a ridiculously infectious personality that embraces who she truly is and showed me at an impressionable age that I don’t need to shrink myself to be accepted just the way I am. If you have teenage daughters, I highly suggest you show them some of her materials because chances are, they’re feeling like they may be “too much” as they are or uncomfortable in their bodies and I just love how unapologetically her she is.

Another staple in my book collection is Mally’s book, “Love, Lashes, and Lipstick”. This one was more of an autobiography mixed with makeup advice and a motivation I didn’t realize I needed at the time.

Naturally, I gravitated towards introducing some of Mally Beauty’s products into my collection as it grew. Her Face Defender became a staple for refreshing makeup and mattifying my face without adding extra “product” and I loved her eyeshadow sticks for quick and easy eyes in so many beautiful colors. I could watch her for hours on QVC demoing those magic sticks.
Laura Geller

I grew up in the early 2000’s, when QVC and HSN were peak shopping content. Another person I loved watching was Laura Geller. She had such a fun personality and I was always in awe of the transformations her products created.

Laura Geller’s Balance n Brighten powder became a staple in my collection as a teenager. I thought it was magic how the colors would mix together to perfectly match your skin tone and correct any discoloration.
The truly humbling fact of the matter is that now that I have been in the industry since 2010, I have been told I am an inspiration to others. Sometimes I picture myself as a makeup newbie, just trying to match my skin tone or learn how to blend eyeshadow in my childhood bedroom and can’t believe how far I’ve come. I’m endlessly thankful for where this journey has led and the people I’ve met along the way.
